Hi there! Just want to start off by saying that I'm enjoying NarutoMud very much so far!
The customization available is incredible and the whole atmosphere/gameplay feels so very ninja. I've spent hours of valuable leveling time just playing around with the different jutsu
Tonight I did notice something with the combat system that I thought a little odd. While messing around in the arena I had this fight go down:
You yell, "Suiton: Kasui Mizu no Jutsu!"
You motion a small amount of water at Zato!
Your water spike **** SMITES **** Zato! You do 103 points of damage.
You gain 297 experience
Zato is stunned, but will probably recover.
You injure Zato's right leg! You do 1 points of damage.
You gain 14 experience
Zato is incapacitated and will slowly die, if not aided.
Zato is DYING.
<Health (39/100) Chakra (124/484) Stamina (96)>
Zato jumps over you.
You gain 0 experience
Zato is incapacitated and will slowly die, if not aided.
Zato is DYING.
<Health (39/100) Chakra (124/484) Stamina (95)>
Zato jumps over you.

Zato is DYING.
<Health (39/100) Chakra (124/484) Stamina (94)>
k zato
You must MURDER a player.
<Health (39/100) Chakra (124/484) Stamina (94)>
A slow chant floats down to you: "Two men enter ... one man leaves."
Zato is incapacitated and will slowly die, if not aided.
<Health (45/100) Chakra (136/484) Stamina (100)>
Zato yells, "Suiton: Kasui Mizu no Jutsu!"
Zato motions a small amount of water at you!
Zato moves into the Kame Style stance.
Zato's water spike DESTROYS you! You receive 61 points of damage.
You have been DEFEATED in the Arena!
Now, after my first attack the echo that my opponent was "incapacitated and will slowly die, if not aided." flashed up and I thought I had this pretty well in the bag! So I was surprised to find that my dying incapacitated opponent suddenly spiked my face with water for the win.
I figure one of two things happened here. Either the jutsu was started before he went unconscious, and the game doesn't check for consciousness when the attack goes off, or perhaps seeing as we are all BA ninja he was holding onto consciousness even in negative HP and surprised me.
If it's the latter maybe just that echo needs changed to something more fitting ("xx is mortally wounded") to indicate that they are close to death but not necessarily down and out. If the problem is the former then it's just a bug
Again I want to just say that I really like what you're getting at here and look forward to my ninja career and seeing NarutoMud develop!
[Fixed] Fighting Stystem Quirks
Re: Fighting Stystem Quirks
Hmm, it looks me like the reason that it actually fired against you is because there was a tic in the middle of combat, restoring some hp to both of you (you can notice it if you check your own hp listed there) and bringing him back up to consciousness.
Now, it seems pretty obvious, from the lack of him starting handseals in what you posted, that he started the jutsu before you incapacitated him....so the real question is whether or not him being incapacitated delayed when the jutsu should have fired, or if he just got really lucky and became conscious right before his attack would have triggered normally.
...That's just what I think happened....I may very well be totally off...

Hrm.......................................................................................yeah, I'd say this post belongs more in the Bugs board. So, you can feel free to repost something in Reviews and Critiques, but the main thrust of your issue seems like a bug to me. However, I'd still love to see a fleshed out review, so I hope you post one.

I'm pretty sure you're right. Perhaps a decent fix would be removing the regen from the tick if a player is in that "near-death" state. This would make the message more accurate, but would probably require more coding than simply changing the message.Ichiro wrote:Hmm, it looks me like the reason that it actually fired against you is because there was a tic in the middle of combat, restoring some hp to both of you (you can notice it if you check your own hp listed there) and bringing him back up to consciousness.

Re: [OPEN] Fighting Stystem Quirks
The core issue is that you don't lose your skill timers when you become incapacitated, only when you die. So, there is a strong chance he healed just enough so when the timer expired, the action could complete. This is a relatively easy fix to put in. I can either just flat out kill the timer, or have the 'mess up' message show up. Either way, it won't be too bad.

I talked to both of them about it on the MUD, and they said that zato had been in the negative the entire time (went from -5 to -1)....soooo......there's that
Re: [OPEN] Fighting Stystem Quirks
This was one I was shocked I didn't find earlier. Timers kept running past death. So, in theory, you could launch attacks or whatever even after you died. Makes me wonder if this could be considered a bug in SMAUG. Irregardless, I fixed it.

I personally feel that a double negative should enhance the negative, so I feel like I can slowly re-write English by forcing my will upon my own words.

This was also, I believe, the cause behind several instances of players attack other players right AFTER an arena fight, then being locked down. So...that should be taken care of now too
