While we sleep we could receive messages that showed us that we were dreaming and what we were dreaming about. Maybe something like,
You dream you are in a wide open field when suddenly you are attacked by a large swarm of ninja. You fight the ninja for what seems like hours when finally you defeat the last one. Heading back to your village you are hailed as a hero and are made the village leader due to your great skills.
What other people in the room would see would be something like,
A fierce look develops on <sleeping name>'s face before giving way to a goofy grin.
These messages could also be customizable like trash talk and you could enter what other people see when you have a good dream or a bad dream. Also perhaps once in a blue moon you could learn a skill from your village without practice points while dreaming. The reasoning behind this could be that you something in your dream gave you revelation into the inner workings of the skill and thus you are now able to perform it. Or it could be the delivery mode for a random special jutsu after some high level level. Like while dreaming the idea for rasengan or chidori comes to you and when you wake up you have the skill at 1%.
To keep people from doing this while afk you could have it so that nightmares wake you up and you can't sleep for a while. To keep that from being a burden to the average player you could also make it so you can turn on or off dreams in the config options.

Re: Dreams
Interesting. I originally had an idea which was similar, but Imms could add dreams to the list sort of like our bot check questions. Then I thought it might be cool to let players dream about events that recently happened to them...like them learning a skill or getting killed or something like that. I dunno if I'd like dreams to be anything more than a fun extra thing. Also, I dunno if making them settable would be all that fun, no one else but you would see them.

Re: Dreams
I think settable dreams would help increase the RP and IC atmosphere on the mud. Especially for characters that have a troubled side to them for whatever reason (Shiro's split personality, Chihiro's village being annihilated when she was real young, Sayonno's memories of that individual she followed for a long time, and the list goes on and on). Yes, others wouldn't know what we were dreaming, but I think they'd pick up on "Wow, they sure seem to have a troubled sleep"
Re: Dreams
The only settable thing about them would be the expression on your face while dreaming. Like you could set a couple of expressions for a good dreams and a couple of ones for bad dreams. Other then that what the character sees while they sleep would be whatever the Imms set the dreams as.
Re: Dreams
Sayono fully endorses this idea : ) Skill wise i believe shouldn't be Handseal ability or Shuure Able.. Actually special abilities that occur in dreams should only be practiced in battle...and staring from one percent makes that chances increasingly difficult... I think also their should be a limit on the amount of times your able to gain a skill VIA dreaming.
Re: Dreams
I don't think allowing players to gain skills through dreams is a good idea. I think it'd be better to keep it purely 'extra' and more for RP purposes.

Re: Dreams
Hmmmm, that raises a rather intriguing point... If dreams could have a slight effect on you (ie if you have a good dream stamina comes back ever so slightly faster, nightmares have the opposite) then how about a jutsu that affects a sleeping individuals dreams? It would be basically cosmetic, so it would be unfair to make it overly expensive to learn, but I think it would be kind of neat for rp purposes to be able to plague someone with nightmares, or wander past a sleeping newb and bless them with a pleasant dream : ) Even if dreams didn't have an effect, however minor, it would still be kind of neat...
You could even have it as settable (as in, the dreams you send) but I don't think that would be necessary...

Re: Dreams
I'm unsure how dreaming might lead to an increase in skill points, but I do like the idea of dreams. *bumps*
More spam to read while waiting for your stamina to creep back up!
Apart from the common pool of dreams..maybe even 'Villager' and 'Genin' dreams...(being chased by trainers with canes rather than Riyokus holding sharp objects) or Male vs Female dreams? Entirely PG, of course. 0=)
Not too sure what to think about the idea of having botchecks while sleeping. There's questions while you play, questions while you train, and now questions while you sleep..might be pushing it aleettle.

Sorry to break this to you, but the botcheck questions can already appear when you are sleeping.

Yeah, Bot check questions are OOC, which is why they can happen at any time. They aren't tied to any event, but to a timer. The only way to to not get a bot check question is turn off the option with config -botcheck.
