Pets!

Postby Yumi » Sat May 29, 2010 7:48 pm

Anyway, I want a "Usagi-sama" to run around with me. So can we please tame animals. A simple request.

Not sure how you would code it but, make it so animals like rabbits, and some other animals are tamable, become pets, with
stats of their own. Also make it so we can rename and everything.

You would also have to add some animals that are not around, and maybe even do the whole bug thing like in the Naruto manga or anime..

I seem to remember this being brought up before with Animal trainer classes, but I hadn't thought of taming wild animals...
of course there would have to be a flag on the mob to allow it to be tamed in the first place, and the taming command could work like catching pokemon...

Hrm, I had thought of throwing in pet stores, but taming might be cool. Especially if it had a Pokemon/Monster Rancher-esque way to be controlled, learn moves and level up.

I wanted this mainly for RP....As well as adding room for new taijutsu and ninjutsu you could do individual pets stats, giving players something else to work on.

I just thought of this some more, and it'd be really cool if a pet could join in attacks with you. Like, you could teach your pet an attack and then it'd be able to use it on it's own or join in your moves for cool combinations.

Or even better, break it down into three options -

Pets, Summons, Puppets

All of should have a set amount of levels, and their own experience. Perhaps put them all under the umbrella of 'Ally'. You would probably only be able to select 1 of these, but If they came from skills as suggested below, you could allow players to unpractice and try others, however maybe only allow them to select -1- type from their selection, outlined below.

Pets (taijutsu) Pets are mostly known for their taijutsu-based assistance. You could give Pets abilities like combo to assist any taijutsu-based attack, auto-aid/rescue, and several basic attacks like claw, bite. Perhaps specific types of pets could get their own special skills (maybe 1 race per village type deal) like a snarl for a dog to give a boost hit/dam affect, then you do maybe a serpent that can do venom or whatever.

In addition, a unique quality for pets would be as they level up they could change descriptors at key points, perhaps earning stats boosts or whatever.

I would suggest you could only have one pet, but the perk to pets could probably be that they could attain -many- skills through their lifespan, which the other allies could not.

Summons (ninjutsu) Summons would be Ninjutsu-based, they too would have levels and perhaps even paths Snake, Snail, Monkey, Frog, etc. As you level up you'd get access to more powerful/varying summons. The only issue I really see with this would be the summons seemed pretty darn rare, so I dunno.

For summons, you could do something like require a blood-pact to access the 'boss' summon. Of course, this isn't available in the beginning, you would have a progressive list of increasingly powerful summons along that bosses types. Perhaps since this is a blood-pact it would deal physical damage to the pc.

Summons would be special in the sense that you could keep access to the whole line, perhaps giving each or several special abilites to make them useful in different situations? Also, as you get through the summons, give specific ones the ability to turn into a weapon (this would obviously pair with the ningu and be a very high level to even be available)

Puppets (ningu) Puppets would be Ningu-based, and act more closely to pets except they get damaged/broken and need repaired. As they level up, they could quality for more 'slots' to attach 'upgrades' which would vary in availability from model to model. These upgrades could be things like defense/attack and auto-air/rescue as well as specific skills. Having a puppet would obviously cost you chakra to maintain and use in combat, and additional ningu skills could reduce the drain and pre-requisite the dual-puppet mastery skill

Puppets are the only ones I see being special in that you could have multiple puppets - in the show 10 was the ridiculous omg epicness, so im thinking the limits would be say two as pretty amazing and high end within our game.

For Genjutsu, what about that ink jutsu? It's a pretty specific ability but very cool. It would work similar to the summons, but instead require scrolls/ink. Perhaps you could train up your drawing in the study to level up and unlock. You could summon out by drawing the monster which would perhaps take a chakra cost and put it on a summon timer that it uses its specific ability to attack (for instance there could be a fire-based attack one, a water-based attack one, a sound-based attack, etc) The more I think about it the more I want to say its too specific, but all of these are kinda picking from specific abilities from characters, so I don't know.

I want to say the idea here would be you could keep summoning multiple and varying ink-creatures as long as you could support them with chakra which could be really cool.

I know these ideas are all very lofty, and would require a good bit of skill and time to see the light of day, so it may be too much for the level of gameplay you are looking for here, but man it would be cool.

Wow, well posted. I think my only curiosity is that what is the difference between a pet and a summon? For example, the Inuzuka clan use dogs, and those are like pets, but Hatake Kakashi uses dogs, and those are definitely summons. I'm wondering if the big difference is that summons come from special 'lands'. So, Kakashi's dogs, like Pakkun, come from the Land of Dogs, while Inuzuka's dogs, like Akamaru, are common.

I wouldn't want there to be a clear distinction between pets and summons. Right now, I see pets to be Pokemon-esque, where you raise it up and it'll grow to love you overtime and if you're really good, it'll learn to speak. Summons would be like pre-built pets, which cost Chakra and only 1 of them exists in the world, so for example not every Frog Summoner could be doing an epic frog battle at the same time.

As for puppets, that is pretty cool. Honestly, it is almost 100% how I wanted to do puppets, so I have nothing to add. However, for the ink Genjutsu summons/beasts, I'm not sure about. I feel like that is mega-specific to Sai and I'm not sure I would like to go that route.

I don't think that the damage should be more than just a few hp, if even more than one, since all the summons we've seen in Naruto require a small offering of blood, which is usually done by biting open one's thumb. This doesn't seem to do much more damage than a pinprick, and doesn't appear to harm the user in any way.
On the matter of the ink "summons", I feel that this is more related to ninjutsu than genjutsu, as the user would be animating the ink itself, which is very obvious when we see Sai's jutsu is dispelled, sending the ink flying about.

I agree. It is made very obvious in Naruto that each summon is a unique being, so two frog summoners fighting each other shouldn't both be able to summon Gamabunta to their assistance, though ideally they shouldn't be fighting each other at all, since they're part of the same organization.

Well, like I said mostly these are all just ideas.

I'm not good at separating out forum responses individually, so i'll just touch on a couple comments.

Technically, there is not much of a difference between all these. In my psuedo-code head, you would have Allies with sub-classes of puppets, summons, pets, etc. The ally classes all behave more specifically to how they level up and contain the varying species within their class, but each is just a different implementation to add flavor and make them unique. The properties of each are not something I have thought deeply on and ignoring the systems, most things should try to be as close to balanced as possible (though that doesn't necessarily mean 'equal')

From a gameplay standpoint, a pet is something that -you- trained up. You picked its skills and taught it what it knows, a summon is something that you simply call up and perhaps command over, you've not trained them or anything along those lines. They would be far more utility/situational and that's why I suggested players be allowed to call upon any of several summons while those who choose pets get the advantage of always having it around, selecting its skills, etc.

I sort of ran out of steam on the Genjutsu ideas, but it seems like with what we have available something should fill in the gap there to round out all of the jutsu (which is where I was going), but I suppose you could go the complete opposite and just make all these their own category.

I wasn't suggesting lumping them all into one category at all. It just seems to me that Genjutsu doesn't lend itself very well to a pet of sorts, as it is based entirely around modifying your enemy's perception. Plus, I don't think every branch of jutsu necessarily has to have a pet option. I also agree with Gatz that the ink bit seems to be fairly particular to Sai and may not be a good thing to add at this point.

well, we've seen in Naruto, that some summons can assist their summoner in Genjutsu, or create their own. So, there could be more genjutsu specific summons under the animal type, perhaps even a toggle to specify which type (attack or support) of summon you prefer.

Animals- I think animals should be trained in skills, stats, ect according to their owner. Generally, they would have to be more taijutsu and ninjutsu because genjutsu can't be used on or by most animals. Of course you should have to tame them, and level them up just like if they were a player. Having loyalty and hungry as well. You should have to feed them, or let them eat dead things to refill their hungry...Yes..Its a bit gross but...its how the world works. You should be able to name, change details, and even give them stat boasting items, and have them wear items.

Summons- Clearly these would be quest rewarded/ RP rewards. They should draw from all kinds of jutsu, as they can use all of them. However they should have set skills and stats as they are summons, which should only be around for a battle. They should also cost one large sum of chakra.

Puppet- Puppets should have stats/skills based on what kind of puppet it is. So a puppet of a human would reflect that of a human. A puppet of a rabbit would reflect that of a rabbit. However they should be able craft and buy them. Of course you would need about 15-20 different kind of puppets. On the number of puppets one can have it should be its own skill thing and determined by the level. So, for about every 20 points I should be able to control one puppet. So 160 points would give me eight puppets or if I use 280 points, it would give me fourteen. However to curb that large number you should make it so use of each puppet reduces your max chakra by the type of puppet you use. So, I could use a bunch of weak puppets or a few strong ones.

PS: I think a few post should be merged and linked to this and vice versa.

What? Ma and Pa use a singing Genjutsu! Also, Sasuke locks Manda in a Genjutsu. I'd love to have my pet be able to inflict terrible Genjutsu on my opponents. :(

Only mammals can use/be effected by genjutsu. So, bugs, fish and birds among other things are immune
