Please note, this is a work in progress with more to come as I find time to work on it. I hope the information shared here will be useful to the beginner in getting used to this place. The thoughts here are my own and I have very little if any authority in NarutoMUD other than being a Newbie Helper.
What Every Newbie Needs to Know - RULES
If you’re reading this, you’ve probably been on the mud for a little while at least, but nonetheless, I still want to go over some useful things. Please note that you can access helpfiles both in-game and on the webpage (http://narutofor.us/help.php)
1) Read Help Names. It seems to me, that the most important thing, is your name must be Japanese sounding while not being the name of a Naruto Char (or close to the name). The help names file gives you a complete listing of the rules for naming here in NarutoMud.
2) Read Help Rules and Help BOR (Bill of Rights). These two files will give you an overview of what you can expect here at NarutoMud.
I have, admittedly had my own disagreements with the imms over a few minor things. I get mad, storm out, calm down, and come back. Point is, the imms are trying to make this a great place. They do have some high standards (especially when it comes to bios). I have never seen an imm not willing to listen to a player’s comments or concerns. Depending on what the issue is, they will work with you in fixing whatever problem you may be having (this mostly applies to bios – which is the only area I’ve really gotten angry about).
I think this mud has GREAT imms. They’re not afraid to talk to players. They don’t unbalance the game by constantly running their uber-equipped alts all over the place. They try to take care of problems quickly and efficiently. They do their best to enforce the rules fairly to all players.

What Every Newbie Needs to Know – Getting Started
So, you just logged on and created a new character here at NarutoMud. There are going to be several topics in the forum here that should be helpful if you have any questions. Here are some things you can expect early in the game.
1. Usually, you begin life in a name authorizing room. Take the time to read “help names”. Help files can be read in-game or from the webpage here http://narutofor.us/help.php. If you find that your name does not fit the naming convention for NarutoMUD, just type name <newname> (with your new name in that spot) to change your name to a more appropriate name for the mud.
2. After your name is authorized, you are given the option to go to the Academy or to dive right in and play. If this is your first time here, I STRONGLY recommend the Academy. It’s not your normal mudschool where you fight mobs, get eq and your first level. The Academy is a quest, and as such, I can’t tell you much. I will say pay close attention and read room descriptions.
3. When you finally enter into the newbie area (a forest of rabbits and deer), I recommend killing rabbits and saving ryo (money) until you have around 40 ryo. Then go into town to get a fine shinai. After that, kill rabbit and deer until you’re about level 4 or 5. At level 5 go into the Hidden Forest and kill ninja. The newbie ninja is the lowest one and they get increasingly difficult as you travel east and follow the circle around the forest. Be careful not to sleep or rest in a room where a ninja repops (cause there may be one hidden there). However, if you just need more to kill, rest and wake or sleep and wake until one’s there. The resting will trigger one to appear eventually (usually within 2 to 3 rest commands).
4. The first skill I recommend getting is Boukenka. At low levels, it’s wonderful as it increases the EXP you get for walking. When you level you always get an ability point. Ability points are used to levelup your level in Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, and Genjutsu. Typing Stat will show you how many ability points you have available and how high your ability levels are. You can change the distribution of your points at anytime by using levelup and leveldown commands. You will lose skills if you practice below the level required for that skill (but you’ll get the practice point back unless it’s a skill that cannot be unpracticed like Haburi. What Every Newbie Needs to Know – About Stats, LSC, and PSM.
A lot of things come into play when you think about your stats. So, lets start with the basics.
1. You can only train your stats to level 20. You also only get around 75 trains to use.
2. Living Stat Code is a unique feature (imo) of Naruto Mud. Basically, you train stats by doing work (pushups, situps, kata, studying, waterwalking, treewalking, meditating to name a few). Downside, is the more you get, the harder the next one is. Also, if you don’t continually LSC you run the risk of losing your earned stats. The premise is basically the idea if you don’t work out on a regular basis, you won’t keep the strength you have developed. Stats built with training points cannot be lost (unless you untrain), but LSC developed stats can be lost if you don’t continue the LSC to maintain it.. You also sometimes need a certain amount of strength for some lscs like pushups.
3. PSM – Passive Stat Modifier – Many higher-level skills have Stat Modifiers. Some are beneficial, some are not. To get the beneficial ones, you need to get the skill to 100% (requires a wisdom of 20).
4. How do I increase my HP, Chakra, or Stamina? Common question, to increase HP, your stats in strength, charisma, and luck must be 9 or better. The more points you put into these slots, the more hp you will develop. For Chakra, you need intelligence and constitution – you can then chakramold more chakra. For stamina, the required stats are strength and dexterity.
5. Genkai and Kagirinai – These are some abilities you get as you level. These allow you to train your stats using LSC and PSM to levels over 20. Genkai allows you to go to 25 (you get a total of 3 them – each one at a different time when you level “alist” should tell you when). Kagirinai allows you to take a stat at 25 up to 30. I recommend getting wisdom that high as that allows you to have bonus practices.
There is probably a lot more that I am leaving out about stats, but this guide is to help the newbie get used to and be aware of some of the unique features of NarutoMud. I may elaborate more on stats later or I may not.
***Edited to Add*** One important thing I forgot to mention is Botcheck is LSC for Luck. As far as I am aware, it's the only LSC for luck in the game. Luck is helpful in getting through your LSC with few setbacks. I know, the questions are annoying, but I think it does help some...

The skill practice system seemed difficult at first to me to figure out. Well, not really, but I had to have someone tell me the trick, so I decided to share the information here.
1. When you level you may receive up to 3 things. You always get an abilitiy point, you will get a total of 10 practice points (1 point every other level until you have 10 - till lvl 21), and 70 something trains (I forgot the exact number).
2. Slist – Shows you the skills available for your village and the amount AP you need to assign to Taijutsu, Ninjutsu, or Genjutsu for the skill.
3. Stat – Will show you how many Ability Points you have available to distribute and how many you have already assigned to Tai, Nin, and Genjutsus.
4. Levelup and Leveldown will increase and decrease the number of ability points you have assigned to tai, nin, and genjutsu.
5. If you leveldown an ability below the level of a skill that you have practiced, you will lose that skill (don’t worry, you don’t lose you practice point). The only exception to this is permanent skills, which include Haburi, Ishiryoku, and the two Furies. When your ability level falls below what is required for you to have them, they will be deactivated until you increase the ability to the required level.
6. Some skills are automatic once you practice them (like boukenka). Other skills like kick in taijutsu and goukakyuu require you to shuuren (for taijutsu) or handseal (for nin and genjutsu) them to 50% before you can use them in combat.
7. Some skills as mentioned before CANNOT be unpracticed. Also, some skills do not work with other skills. Be sure you read the help files prior to practicing a desired skill. Ignorance is not an excuse the imms will accept.

Some of these are obvious, some are not so. ALL are useful and I’ll try to describe how to use them and what they do here.
The Standard
· Look – Shows you where you are and who or what is in here with you. (yeah, I know pretty redundant.
· Stat – Shows where you are in LSCing you stats, general condition of your body, how you have your ability points allocated, and what level you are.
· Score – This gives you a lot of information about your character. Your stats are displayed to show you their current value and in parenthesis what they have been trained to. It also shows you your ArmorClass, how much ryo you have, available trains, and where your bindspot is located.
· Level – Naruto mud runs on a form of exponential leveling system. I haven’t totally figured out the exact mathematic equation it uses. The level command will show you how much EXP you currently have and how much EXP you still need to reach the next level.
Battle Help
· Config +gag – limits the amount of battle spam you see.
· Config –tprompt – The mud will send you your prompt on ticks (great for regenning)
· Config +tally – keeps track of EXP earned between killing blows that you land.
· Config +details – shows your HP, Chakra, and Stamina when grouped.
· Prompt – you can change the information in your prompt. Type help prompt for more information.
RP Related
· Bio – To RP for points you have to have an authed bio. Use the bio editor, it’s easy. It has a wordwrap feature so you can copy and paste whole paragraphs from your word processor to the editor.
· Config +rp = starts your RP session… besure to turn it off before saying something OOC … from what I understand, all RP sessions are logged.
· Emote – is useful for poses that will begin with your name. Text that will be spoken in an RP and is in quotes will automatically be a different color from the rest of the pose.
· Semote – Will start the pose without your name. But you must put a $n somewhere in the pose so your name is there.
· $n – will insert your name when using semote
· help rppreward shows you what you can “buy” with your RP points.
Fun Extras
· Flist – I’m not sure what the benefits are, but if you group with friends in your list you work on your “relationship” while running.
· Settrashtalk – Allows you to set your own trashtalk. Be sure to config +customtrashtalk if you use it so you can see
I'm not a genius, so if you notice somethng I forgot either here or on another part of this guide, let me know so I can give the most useful and accurate information to our new players.

This is document is very old. I had almost forgot that I had even wrote it. Isn't that amazing? Anyway, after several years hiatus, I may be returning. At least for leisurely play.
I am very touched that even after all these years from the time that I had wrote this, it is still useful enough for Gatz to declare it useful. I may update the information as I discover what has changed in my absence. Or, I may be lazy. No promises.
Continue to glean from this knowledge of old and may it help you as you develop your characters here.

If you begin to update this, just make sure you either mark the parts which are updated or try to remove all the outdated stuff first. It'd be confusing to have a mish-mash of updated stuff and outdated stuff.

Hmm, one thing to note: Fine Shinai is actually one of the worst weapons available...I think the small throwing kunai or the staff are the two best, but I'd have to check. That migt be worth updating in there though.
Also, there's a special bonus available to people when they are mutually "Best Friend"s on flist.
